Best of 2019 Part 4 - June, July and August

After a bird heavy May post, I've compressed the next three months into one post. July and August are usually the poorest birding months of the year.

If you want to see Pelagic Cormorants, then Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts WA is the place to go.

The white spot on the rump and the thin bill are the best field marks to distinguish this species from the more common Double-crested Cormorant.

This immature Bald Eagle was also on display.

I had the good fortune to add a new bird to my life list on this day. It was a Marbled Murrelet. It is not a rare bird, but one that is rarely this close to shore.

June 29, 2019

I visited Brunswick Point in Delta and took a couple of good photos of common birds.

I really like this photo of a Barn Swallow about to take a bath in the Fraser River.

Speaking of Barn Swallows, this photo of one on nest at Reifel was a keeper.

To wrap up June, this photo of a Marsh Wren was taken on the same day at the same location.

July 2019

July is one of the quiet months of the year for birds. Most of the photos were taken in our backyard, including this Goldfinch visiting the bird bath.

Six days later, a similar photo with a House Finch.

On the 26th I got a nice shot of our resident Hummingbird.

On the 27th I was back at Reifel where I took several shots of a House Sparrow doing something with a piece of fluffy vegetation.

On the same visit I took this shot of an interestingly coloured Pigeon scratching its eye.

Also on July 27th I visited Point Roberts and recorded a few good shots there.

Here's some Pelagic Cormorants on the wing:

And here they are in the water. They are much less bulky looking than the more common Double-crested Cormorants. The gulls are Glaucous-winged.

August 2019

The first shot of the month was taken in our backyard and does not feature a bird, but a common Butterfly.

Considered a pest and an invasive species, I still think that the Starling is an attractive bird.

European Starling - Blackie Spit, Surrey BC - August 5, 2019

This bird was the subject of a rare bird alert for about six months before suddenly disappearing in early January 2020. This is a bird more commonly seen in California than BC, which is where I got my lifer way back in 1989 .

I included this photo of a common bird just because it's a bit surreal to my eye.

This is another backyard shot, a good one of our resident Anna's Hummingbird.

On the same day, i visited Point Roberts and saw these birds at Lighthouse Marine Park.

On the 25th I was back at Point Roberts for this Cormorant shot.

And a House Finch in an unusual setting.

I made my way from Point Roberts to Reifel in Ladner.

There has been a Great Egret moving around the Lower Mainland for what seems like a couple of years. In August it was at Reifel.

It's nice to see a Hummingbird feeding on natural nectar, as was the case at Reifel on this day.

I was very lucky to spot an uncommon Warbler on my visit, a Northern Waterthrush. These are not typical colourful warblers, they are quite drab and easy to miss.

And finally on August 28th, there was a large flight of ducks overhead, mostly Northern Pintail and American Wigeon.
